ADULT RESPITE CARE
About This Service
Adult Respite Care is a family support service providing funding for temporary relief from the physical and emotional demands involved in caring for an adult child over the age of eighteen who has a disability.
Respite creates greater opportunities for all family members to live actively and participate in community activities and allows parents/guardians time for themselves.
Respite care can be arranged in the family’s home, in the care provider’s home, or in a community setting.
The Role of Catulpa Community Support Services
- Identification and coordination of the natural support systems you may already in place (Parent to parent, family and friends)
- Information about local respite care providers, resources and options

Catulpa Community Support Services’ Respite Program is available to families residing in Orillia, Midland, Collingwood, Alliston, and surrounding areas
Funding for the program is provided by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, so there is no fee to program participants. Once funding is in place, families can contact a DSP (Direct Support Provider) directly by email or phone to provide supports on a fee-per-service basis. This first contact should include a discussion about availability, qualifications and any specific skills required for the adult child. We recommend individuals and families follow this initial discussion with a face-to-face meeting to discuss duties, care needs and any safety concerns. Remember to discuss goals and interests. Determine schedules, availability, rate of pay and expenses. A written agreement is recommended. If you aren’t sure you want to commit to a long schedule, try one or two visits and reassess at that time. In Simcoe County, supportyourway.ca allows families requiring services to complete a profile so local DSP Workers (Direct Support Providers) can be best matched to your needs. More information can be found at here. Please note that respite service providers are self-employed and are not pre-screened by Catulpa Community Support Services.
