PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Adult Protective Service Worker supports adults with a developmental disability who are living on their own in the community, to strengthen their capacity to manage and acquire the skills that are necessary for daily living, helps them to enhance their support networks and their awareness of community-based resources and government-funded services. The Adult Protective Service Worker, with the consent and direction of the individual, provides assistance with planning and accessing support based on the individualized needs and goal of the person supported.

STATEMENT OF MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Adults and their Families seeking support from APSW:

To provide short-term (up to 90 days) assistance to individuals who request service from the Adult Protective Service Worker program, for stabilization and assessment of their longer-term needs (if any)
To establish and maintain a positive rapport and professional relationship with each client
To assist individuals (and their families) to identify their priorities using a strength-based approach
To advocate for the rights of individuals to participate meaningfully in their community
To provide service co-ordination/case management by:
- assisting to access community services and resources
- identifying the need for specialized services and assisting with referrals
- assisting to develop individual support plans, transition plans
- coordinating services provided by multiple agencies
- assisting families to recruit mediators and respite providers
- assisting families, community and agency personnel to identify strategies to respond to gaps in service
To provide consultation and information to families and other service providers
To provide direct service (if required and in the absence of other readily available services) such as: court support and assistance with the justice system, problem solving, empowering, budgeting and assistance to manage personal finances, assistance to find suitable accommodation, assistance to attend appointments

2. Community:

To maintain a co-operative working relationship with professional agencies and community resources
To strengthen communities to respond to the needs of vulnerable populations
To participate in inter-agency committees as assigned
To promote the Community Resource Service in the community, through presentations, literature and inter-agency functions

3. Agency:

To regularly attend and participate in supervision meetings and annual performance appraisal
To regularly attend and participate in team meetings
To adhere to all agency standards, policies and procedures
To collect and report service delivery data as required
To record and report client information necessary for effective case management
To participate in staff training in consultation with Manager/Supervisor and to demonstrate initiative in learning and developing new techniques of service delivery
Must be aware of and adhere to Health & Safety Policy Rules & Regulations
To carry out such other duties as may be assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Post-secondary education at community college level in the social sciences and behavioural disciplines
Experience (preferably 3 years) working with individuals with developmental disabilities

Knowledge and Skill Level

Knowledge of normal and abnormal development
Knowledge of family systems theory and an understanding of the family development and functioning
Ability to develop trusting, co-operative relationships with clients, families, service providers, and other stakeholders
Excellent communication, negotiating skills and judgment to manage communication
Knowledge of community resources for youth and adults with special needs including dual diagnosis and relevant legislation
Ability to support self-advocacy and empowerment for individuals/families
Strong knowledge of strength-based planning and interventions
Sensitivity, understanding and ability to work with a variety of value systems, beliefs and cultures
Working knowledge of word processing and data entry
Capacity to work independently
Working knowledge of the French Language is beneficial
Aware of Health & Safety Rules & Regulations

We invite applications for a Volunteer Board Audit and Finance Committee role in Barrie, ON, where successful candidates will play a crucial role in overseeing the agency’s governance and shaping its future policies. Currently, Catulpa Community Support Services invites volunteer applicants in the role of:

Accounting Professional

Experience: To be considered for the role of Accounting Professional on the Catulpa Community Support Services Board Audit and Finance Committee, candidates should possess a strong background in finance and accounting, ideally with a professional designation such as CPA. Candidates should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of financial management, budgeting, and reporting processes. Experience in non-profit organizations or social service sectors is advantageous, as it indicates a familiarity with the unique financial challenges and reporting requirements inherent in these settings. Strong analytical and strategic financial planning skills are crucial, as the Accounting Professional will play a pivotal role in ensuring the organization's fiscal responsibility and sustainability. The ability to collaborate effectively with other Board Members, understand the financial implications of strategic decisions, and contribute to the agency’s overall financial health is essential for success in this position.

Volunteer Board Audit and Finance Committee: Role & Time Commitment

The Catulpa Community Support Services’ Board is responsible for effective governance of the agency through oversight of strategic planning, fiscal review and determination of mission-related policy.

It is not responsible for fundraising, personnel, programs, services, curricula or budgets. Volunteer Directors provide special skills and knowledge, (finance, law, social services, healthcare, etc.) within the Board setting.

Meetings take place in Barrie, Ontario six times annually for approximately three hours per meeting. Successful Board of Director applicants are appointed for a term of three years and provided a mentor.
